Surface Science and

Nano-Tribology Laboratory

Supported by:

National Science Foundation

Surface Science Laboratory is supported by the National Science Foundation through NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center in Coatings.

Army Research Lab

Our lab uses the LEIS, SPM, Nano Indenter, macro scale DC and EIS to ascertain, understand and elucidate the corrosion mechanisms relevant to military vehicles.

US Navy

We are currently investigating the tribological properties of a fouling release coating the Navy hopes to use in place of TBT based paints on its ships hulls.

TACOM

Our lab uses the LEIS, SPM, Nano Indenter, macro scale DC and EIS to ascertain, understand and elucidate the basic corrosion mechanisms of metal and coatings.

Exatec Automotive Window System

Exatec Automotive Window System, the innovative joint venture of Bayer AG and GE Plastic, produces hard-coated polycarbonate as an alternative to glass for car windows. We use our established technique to measure the micro indentation hardness (MIH) and micro mar resistance (MMR) of their products, and study the effects of physical properties of substrate, hard-coating thickness, and adhesion between the coating and substrate on the MIH and MMR.

Guardian Industries

Guardian is one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world.

Visteon

Visteon is one of the worlds biggest automotive suppliers.

Sun Chemical

Sun Chemical is the world's largest manufacturer of printing inks and coatings; a leading manufacturer of printing plates and films, and one of the largest chemical producers in the world.

Masco

Masco is a recognized global leader in home improvement and building products. While the Masco name itself may not be a household word, many of the subsidiary companies are. In the past four decades, Masco has evolved from a small company into an international organization with annual sales of nearly $4 billion and an impressive record of profitability.

We use our established technique to measure the micro indentation hardness (MIH) and micro mar resistance (MMR) of their new products, and study the effects of physical properties of substrate, hard-coating thickness, and adhesion between the coating and substrate on the MIH and MMR.
