Our lab started collaborative research with the Coatings Research Institute in EMU in 1995 using the SPM to study the structure of a variety of latex coatings and other polymeric coatings, and measure the micro indentation hardness (MIH) and micro mar resistance (MMR) of surface clear coatings. This collaboration continues today as we work together to understand the material properties of thin coatings.
We collaborate with the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science, in the study of mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. Using the nanoindentation and nanoscratch technique, we have investigated the radial compression of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes , measuring the radial compressive elastic modulus and estimating the compressive strength of carbon nanotubes synthesized by Professor Si-shen Xie's group in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science.
Our laboratory cooperates with Material Science Department of Fudan University on the study of micro/nano mechanics, and micro/nano tribology. We cooperate with the Macromolecular Science Department to study the mar resistance of polymeric coatings, and with the Optical Science and Engineering Department to study the mar resistance of superhard thin films. |
