Fish Lake Winter Term Trip
March 28-30, 2003
This Fish Lake trip again had us guessing if Michigan's fickle early spring weather would cooperate. Jack and Norb held vigil over the computer screens for potential breaks in the clouds. The Saturday rocket launches went off beautifully. The biggest rocket, boasting a G motor and patriotic theme, landed safely in the dry bog and was recovered. Mike Lahey's EMU "Flying Eagle" 3 D-engine homebrew met its fate in a tall tree. Kevin Dehne's ever popular nature hike didn't lose anyone, followed by the usual trip into town to the Dairy Queen and the tool store (grunt-grunt, ah-la Tim Allen). It would turn out mostly cloudy except for some tantalizing views through periodic breaks on Saturday night. Ironically, most of Michigan was in the clear Saturday night except for the thumb area. Still, most all got good looks at Jupiter, Saturn, and a fine selection of springtime galaxies and globular clusters- a success. Some took to Astronomy Monopoly and video games to relax and enjoy each others' company, while others risked life and limb (well, maybe not that dramatic) in building a trebuchet - a catapult.... "Stand clear. Look out!" There was even a Harding family reunion! Clear skies next time, right?
