Fish Lake Winter Trip
March 8-10, 2002

Like any Fish Lake trip, fingers are always crossed hoping Michigan's fickle winter weather would cooperate - and with recent trips, it has - until this time.  If the weather was to be cloudy at least Mother Nature picked a dramatic way to do it.  We arrived on Friday to 60 degree temps, hazy sunshine, and slushy mud.  This was followed by driving rain and gale force winds. By late Saturday you would have thought we were on an alien planet with the blinding snow storm, continued 40-60mph winds, and below-zero wind chills.  What a weekend!  Only a few glimpses through holes in the clouds qualified as observing.  Even the rocket launches and Kevin Dehne's ever popular nature hike had to be postponed, a Fish Lake first.  In spite of all this, most folks found the weekend enjoyable if not at least interesting.  So much for the anticipated views of Jupiter, Saturn, Comet Ikeya-Zhang, and the host of springtime galaxies.  Oh well....  there are always Astronomy Monopoly and video games to pass the time!
