Fish Lake Weekend
April 4-6, 2008
After such a snowy and cloudy winter who would think random chance would operate in our favor for the first weekend in April? Well, it did! The clouds would eventually give way late Friday evening to reveal a star studded sky with very steady seeing, albeit with some fog and transparancy deficit at times. We're not complaining at all! Saturn looked great just east of Regulus, Mars was a tiny orange disk in the heart of Gemini above, and the spring galaxies and globulars were spotted by the fleet of scopes and 50 observers or so on hand from Delta College and EMU. Saturday night was a repeat after a glorious sunny afternoon. The sun even sported some nice prominences for our H-alpha scope. There was a VERY bright, *slow* moving object spotted by Jon and observed by those up at the time heading south out of Ursa Major that rivaled Venus in magnitude for a time before slowly fading into the southeast. What was it, HST...? Not even "Heavens Above" would say. Very odd.
Rockets once again were successful- a small test bird, followed by Norbert's long burn G into the nethersphere, and Jason's odd spool rocket on a redline G engine. Even a few waterlogged rcokets from events past were recovered- good spot Sharon. Fun stuff. Jason Gibson concentrated on imaging once again resulting in some very nice deep sky shots, as did Jack Underwood- results below. And after several patient months of waiting, Mike Garrison got his vaunted all-sky meteor camera project installed on the kitchen area roof after much effort, setup, and programming. He also contributed a dedicated computer towards the project. Norb, Jon, Jason, and Jack put their two cents worth in, too, during installation. A few more adjustments and the device should be giving us some interesting results (to be posted elsewhere on this site). Pretty cool! Jay and Chris let Kevin and others try their hand, er feet, at unicycling once again. No scopes nearby were damaged nor skulls fractured in the process, whew. Meals were great- lasagna for dinner- and the "walk of death" a success. No one was lost in spite of the mushy spring ground and high water (this is a good thing)... Kevin Dehne must really find another name for this Fish Lake ritual! Sunday departure came so soon... yet another beautiful sunny day. Such luck... please, same for next time... pretty please!
