Fish Lake Astronomy Class / Overnighter
June 25-28, 2009
This four day weekend was the second class in observational astronomy (ASTR 378/591) officially taught at Fish Lake. The waning crescent moon, Saturn, Jupiter along with Neptune, and the usual host of springtime galaxies and summertime globular clusters would present themselves well for an understanding of our place in the Milky Way. We would not be disappointed - the first two nights were clear, especially Friday... all through the night. The late rising moon would cast an unusual glow down the access road, as sight rarely seen as new moons are the general rule for Fish Lake treks. We got off to a damp start on Thursday but skies gave way to some nice views the first evening as well. A very bright Iridium flare and a decent flyover of ISS across the north were seen. Though small in number, the gang stayed up for many hours to see all that our scopes could find. Once again members of the Astronomy Club and Fish Lake veterans stepped up to help out in observing and photography... Jon Mills, Jason Gibson, Bob Justin, Tom Kasper, Mike Garrison, and Norb Vance were busy tour guides on the EMU C14, 12.5-inch Club Dob, Bob's C11, Norb's C11, the Club 10-inch and our new Meade ETX-LS / 6-inch ACF OTA (wow, that sounds impressive!). The mild June weather was actually quite cool at night. Fans out by the scopes made life tough for the mosquitoes to land. Jason and Norb would again launch rockets on Saturday evening, just after our pizza dinner. Jason's G80-motor struggled to loft a hefty orange beast over the trees, while Norb's G40-motor propelled a baby blue bullet into the abyss never to be seen again. Bob entrusted the controls of his C11 with a quick lesson of which button does what for the class. Rain and clouds finally caught up to us late Saturday night but not before one last look after sunset at Saturn with its rings nearly edge on, oh well. Two out of three nights ain't bad for Michigan.. All in all, aother successful weekend adventure with hopes for an even bigger, better showing next June... Thanks, folks!!!
