UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Why would you want to major in Physics?

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers four undergraduate major programs and two undergraduate minor programs, as follows:

Undergraduate Majors

Engineering Physics - Students following this program will earn a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in physics and will have a strong background in engineering mechanics. Graduates will be well qualified to fill engineering-oriented positions. No minor is required.

Physics Research - For students planning to become research physicists, or planning to pursue an advanced degree in physics or astronomy. No minor is required.

Physics - This major provides a background in physics for employment in industry, business, or government, as well as partial preparation for advanced degrees in physics, engineering, law, finance, medicine, or environmental science.

Physics for Secondary Teaching - This major, in the context of other requirements, qualifies the student for recommendation for certification for the Michigan Department of Education Secondary Provisional Certificate endorsed in physics.

Undergraduate Minors

Physics - This minor is designed to give students an introduction to physics and is appropriate for combining physics with biology, chemistry, astronomy, geology, mathematics, business, English, or journalism.

Physics Teaching - This minor is designed to provide the necessary background for obtaining a secondary certification in physics.

Astronomy - This minor is designed to give students a basic knowledge of astronomy and related fields.
