| The past few years have witnessed some of the most destructive Atlantic hurricane seasons on record. Hurricanes affect all U.S. citizens through higher insurance premiums and higher gas prices. Of course, the impacts are much more direct for those people living in areas prone to hurricanes where lives and livelihoods are in danger. Hurricane track forecasts have improved remarkably over the past decade, but hurricane intensity forecasts have improved little. Hurricane intensity changes are caused by much smaller scale effects, which are largely beyond the limit of current observational resources. This talk will discuss some of the basic physics behind hurricane intensity changes and new satellite observations that may help us understand these changes.
