From Ripples to Rainbows -- Optical Modeling of Defects in Thin Films
Description
The manufacture of thin plastic films of extremely high optical quality is necessary for use in a variety of products ranging from photographic film to flat screen displays.  In this presentation, I will discuss one optical defect that was encountered and how we determined its cause.  Along the way, I will make a slight detour in order to explore an interesting connection between this defect and rainbows, providing a deeper understanding of the physics of rainbows.
