Assigning
Grades Fairly

Description
|
As
the end of the term approaches, all of us will be involved with grades:
some on the giving end, some on the receiving end, some on both.
Yet discussions of how grades are assigned (or should be assigned) seem
to be relatively rare. The Undergraduate Catalog is of little help,
using "average" in the description of the grade scale, without providing
a clear definition of what is meant by that term. We will discuss
advantages and disadvantages to grading on a curve as opposed to a straight
scale, the philosophy behind offering extra credit assignments, and the
extent to which grades reflect what the instructors want them to reflect.
