| A
host of issues were discussed at the NSF-sponsored AAPT New Faculty Conference
that took place from 31Oct - 03Nov. These included recruitment and
retention of majors, inclusion of undergraduates in research, outreach
programs, using computers in instruction, TA training, the employment situation,
and the availability of funding. Plus there was an excellent hour
of physics lecture demonstrations! (The average score of new faculty
on the associated Physics IQ test was only 50%!) I'll give a brief
overview of the conference and hope that we will continue discussion of
one or more of the above topics.
Last week,
peer teaching was discussed. This week, we'll look at other topics
from the meeting.
