Description

Thin
film interference is used in PHY 224 to explain why soap and oil films
sometimes have a rainbow-like appearance. This same interference
phenomenon is used in the design of some mirrors that are used in laser
systems. The talk will begin with a review of thin film interference
and then explore how conventional mirrors are designed. Simple design
modifications, developed this summer, hold promise for producing more durable
mirrors.
