Mr. Peter Distelzweig
Descartes: Making Graphical Representation in Physics Possible
Description
Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650) work was of fundamental imporance in determining the direction of natural scientific, mathematical and philosophical research during his life and in the century following his death. Peter will explore the way Descartes' essay, entitled Geometry, provided some of the key mathematical tools that make graphical representation in physics possible. We will travel back to the exotic mathematical world of the late Renaissance -- where we will find ourselves to be strangers indeed! There we can appreciate Descartes' redefnition of the relationsihip between algebra and geometry that made the emergence of graphical

representation and analysis in physics possble. Be prepared to explore a strange and distant land: the past.
