often ask questions about temperature as if it had a single value everywhere
at the same instant of time. In fact, we are surrounded by a world
out of equilibrium. For example, "room temperature" depends on where
you choose to measure it, and the "outdoor temperature" may be above freezing
even as frost forms. Textbook problems often assume uniform temperatures,
but reality is more complex -- and more interesting.
