Why Does GFP Glow?
Description
Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is used to signal genetic mutations in biological research and is the only naturally occurring fluorescent protein.  Since the use of GFP became widespread, many mutant proteins have been engineered to emit light of different colors.  The problem is, no one understands why they emit the colors they do!  Please join us as Mr. Hoyer describes the research he did last summer to help solve this problem.  He will also describe the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program that provided the support for this research.
