Improvements
in OSEM Sensitivity for LIGO II
|
|
Description
|
| Optical
sensing electro-magnets (OSEMs) are being used for positioning devices
in the LIGO II gravitational wave detection project. LIGO I uses simple
shadow sensors that need to be improved for advanced LIGO detectors using
differential OSEM sensors. Preliminary testing led to the discovery that
the OSEMs cannot respond correctly when damping out the motion. We tried
to resolve this problem by testing different system components such as
light emitting diodes (LEDs), split and single photodiodes, and different
damping fins. We used a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT)
to measure and vary the fin position and were able to determine the best
combination of LED and fin to optimize the OSEM sensitivity. |
